First cultivated: . The most common cultivar group of kiwifruit is oval, about the size of a large hen’s egg: 5–8 centimetres in length and 4.5–5.5 cm in diameter. The dull green-brown skin is covered in short, stiff hair. Underneath is bright green flesh and a small white centre surrounded by rows of small, black, edible seeds. The flavour is sometimes described as a mix of strawberry, banana and pineapple.

Cocktails: Kiwi Green Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kiwi, peeled
  • 2 ounces premium gin
  • 3/4 ounces St. Germain elderflower liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 ounce simple syrup (see Notes)
  • Soda water
  • Kiwi slice (unpeeled), for garnish

Instructions

  1. Add ingredients. In a cocktail shaker, muddle until it is broken down. Add gin, elderflower liqueur, lime juice, and simple syrup.
  2. Shake. Fill the shaker with ice, cover, and then shake until the shaker frosts up. Strain cocktail into an ice filled  tall cocktail glass.
  3. Serve. Top with soda water and garnish with kiwi slice.

California produces 98% of kiwi grown in the United States. They can be used as a natural meat tenderizer. There are over 400 different varieties of kiwis. They were originally called Chinese gooseberries.
