🔪 How to Prepare English Pickling Onions

Preparing small pickling onions can take a little patience, but there’s an easy trick.

  1. Trim away the root and top without cutting too deeply.
  2. Place the onions in a heatproof bowl.
  3. Cover with boiling water.
  4. Leave for around 1–2 minutes.
  5. Drain carefully and allow them to cool.
  6. Gently peel away the outer skins.
  7. Leave the onions whole for traditional pickling.

Top Tip: Try not to cut too deeply into the root. Keeping the onion intact helps it stay firm and crisp during pickling.
